True Self: Chapter Four
I woke up early in the morning. I knew what was in store for me when I got into work. There was no doubt that Kyle would be waiting for me.
As I got ready, I looked down at the small box that Stephanie had gotten me. Inside was the ring that she had given me.
“What the hell?” I shrugged as I picked up the box.
I took a look at the dark black ring that stared back at me. It was heavy in my hand as I picked it up. Most of it was composed of a black ebony material. At first, I thought it was metal, but it looked different by holding it in my hand. I spun it around in my fingers as I looked at it.
The dark red gem stared back at me. I looked into it and got lost inside. It felt like it was drawing me inside.
Suddenly my phone rang, and it brought me back from whatever was happening to me.
“Are you coming into work?” Jacob asked as I answered.
“What? I have…” I trailed off as I looked at the time. “I will be on my way.”
It couldn’t be, I had plenty of time, nearly an hour, to get to work, but now I was over forty minutes late.
I rushed all the way to work.
“You’re late,” Anderson said as he rounded the corner to my cubicle.
