While I do agree with some of what you pointed out, but NO MATTER what you do, or your team. You will hurt more people than help. Most of the people that read these stories are on a lunch break or sitting somewhere on their phones or tablets. Reading a story to pass the time. Do you expect them to write a paragraph for a reply? Yes, the amount of spam stories has gone up, but at the same time the number of authentic writers has also gone up and that's what you are seeing. The A.I. your algorithm is finding is the support apps that help people learn to write better. Grammarly for example helps people correct problems, but at the same time it sends off an A.I. alert to certain algorithms, all of the support help does. So basically you are saying don't use them? Then you will come back and say what new people are writing is trash? Right? Medium set out to help writers, write, bring them into the writing world to explore, their individual thoughts. So why the sudden shift? Using A.I. to find A.I. is flawed. We all know it will find it, even if non is used. It has no idea how to write or read a decent story. Authentic writing can only be read by a human, understood by a human. All you are doing is putting an obstacle course for the spam bots, and pushing authentic writers and readers away to find other places to go, and leaving the spam bots here. It's just a thought, but that's all I got.
